What is a Sonographer?
Ultrasound, also called sonography is a diagnostic medical procedure that uses high frequency sound waves to produce dynamic visual images of organs, tissues, or blood flow inside the body.
A diagnostic medical sonographer is a highly skilled professional who uses specialized equipment to create images of structures inside the human body, that are used by physicians to make a medical diagnosis. Sonographers have extensive direct patient contact that may include some invasive procedures. They must be able to interact compassionately and effectively with people who range from healthy to critically ill. The process involves placing a small device, called a transducer against the patients skin, near the body area to be imaged. The transducer sends a stream of high frequency sound waves into the body, that bounce of the structures inside. These sounds are analyzed by a computer and are illustrated as an image of the structure. The sonographer electronically stores what he or she considers to be the most diagnostically useful images. Selected images are used by an interpreting physician to make final diagnosis. Sonographers can choose to work in clinics, hospitals, private practices, and other medical settings, performing examinations in their area of specialization. Advancement opportunities also exist in education, administration, research and in commercial companies such as application specialists, sales representatives, and technical advisors. In addition to excellent career opportunities, salaries for sonographers are competitive with or higher than other professionals with similar levels of education. Salaries vary depending on years of experience, number of specialities practiced as well as geographic location. There are opportunities for full-time and part-time employment. Employment of diagnostic medical sonographers is expected to grow much faster than the average. This profession is in high demand because ultrasound technology is rapidly becoming a popular, safer alternative to radiologic procedures. College of DuPage, Glen Ellyn IL website.
